Multicultural Group Awards Scholarships

Two Janesville high school seniors have been selected to receive college scholarships from the Janesville Multicultural Teacher Opportunities Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship recipients are Melissa Sanchez and Yoiser Mauleón. Both students attend Parker High School. Sanchez hopes to attend the University of Wisconsin-Rock County and major in secondary science education. Mauleón hopes to attend the University of Wisconsin-Rock County and become a school counselor.

The Janesville Multicultural Teacher Opportunities Scholarship (JMTOS) Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, offers college scholarships of up to $5,000 a year to students of color pursuing a career in education. The scholarship is renewable for up to five years.

Applicants must be identified as African-American, Asian, Latino or Native American on School District of Janesville enrollment forms. Upon attaining a Wisconsin teaching certificate, recipients agree to apply for a position with the School District of Janesville. Recipients hired by the School District of Janesville agree to maintain their employment with the district for a minimum of three years.

To date the JMTOS Fund has awarded 11 scholarships to Janesville students. The students currently in the program are Kendra Fierro, Chastity Harden, Anabel Garcia, Fabiola Fajardo, Jared Fox, Daniel Jackson, Jesse Ramirez, Sofia Sanchez and Nicole Washington.

The scholarships are awarded annually by the Fund’s advisory board. The board members are Jose Carillo, Greg Ardrey, Robert Baldwin, State Sen. Tim Cullen, Superintendent Karen Schulte, Curt Parish, Stephanie Kortyna, and Edna Feldman-Schultz.
