Jay and Carol Wolfenden Establish Endowed Scholarship Fund

WolfendenThe Hillsboro School Funds Advisory Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Jay and Mrs. Carol Wolfenden have endowed a $20,000 scholarship which will benefit Hillsboro High School graduates in perpetuity.  Their intent is to forever support an annual $1000 scholarship for a senior from Hillsboro High School who is pursuing post-secondary education.

The Wolfendens are well-known in the Hillsboro area.  Dr. Jay Wolfenden has practiced dentistry in the area since 1975.  A graduate of UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota Dental School, he chose to establish his practice in the region because he had grown up in Elroy and graduated from Royall High School,  Jay is also well-known for his love of hunting.  Over the years he has pursued his hobby in 12 states and 11 countries.

Carol came to Hillsboro in the late 1970’s.  An English and reading teacher, she also coached forensics and directed plays at Hillsboro High School for seven years before becoming a full-time mom.  When her daughters were school age, Carol resumed her teaching career in Hillsboro as a reading and gifted & talented teacher, later assuming additional responsibilities in curriculum and assessment and ESEA programs.  After working for the Cooperative Educational Service Agency #4 in West Salem, she joined the staff at nearby Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton as their district reading specialist and Title 1 teacher.

In establishing the scholarship the Wolfendens noted, “We have always liked small schools.  They provide personalized, quality education.  Our children had excellent opportunities at Hillsboro, and we want the same for other people’s children.  Beth graduated valedictorian; Emily, salutatorian.  Both attended UW-Madison.  Beth graduated in political science; Emily will graduate soon with a major in kinesiology.”
