Hubie & Joyce Mester Establish Scholarship Endowment

EPSON MFP imageWhether it’s sports or arts events at the School, the annual Belmont School Fair, activities sponsored and supported by the Lions Club, Fire Department, Ambulance Service and Sports Boosters, or services and gatherings at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, you are most likely to meet Belmont’s “First Couple”, Hubie and Joyce Mester.

With their history of involvement in a community where they were ‘born and raised’ it seems natural that the Mesters would be the first to work with the newly formed Belmont School Funds (components of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin) to set up a named scholarship endowment. In making the commitment to establish a scholarship endowment, the Mesters are honoring their son, Wayne, who lost his life in a river tragedy in 2002

Hubert Mester and Joyce Clayton were Belmont High School sweethearts.  Graduates of the Class of 1947, the Mesters originally made their home in the Town of Kendall where they farmed.  They moved to town in 1977 and Hubie took a position with the Belmont Schools where he worked for 20 years.  The Mesters parented 4 children – Becky, Terry, Wayne and Bill – all Belmont Braves.  They are proud grandparents to 15 – 5 who are Belmont Braves, and great-grandparents to 17 – 6 who attend school in Belmont.

In commenting on the scholarship the Mesters noted, “It makes us feel good to do something for our ‘kids’.  There are good folks in our schools and it’s a privilege to help them realize their dreams.”

The inaugural Hubert and Joyce Mester Family Endowment Scholarship in Memory of Wayne Mester will be awarded to a member of the Belmont Class of 2015.  Formal application will be made through the high school guidance department.  The awardee will be pursuing post-secondary education in the field of agriculture.  The Belmont Excellence in Education and Scholarship Fund Advisory Board will select the recipient.

The Belmont School Funds are components of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc., a tax-exempt public charity.  For more information about establishing a named family endowment or to make a donation, contact advisory board member Mary Demo (608.762.5393), Tammy Haag (608.732.2350), or Kathy Miller-Riechers (608.762.5794) or CFSW Donor Services Representative Barb Daus ( or 608-778-3344).  Donations to the fund can be sent to the Belmont School Funds (specify Excellence in Education or Scholarship Endowment), PO Box 348, Belmont, WI 53510 or can be made online at
