Eric Frydenlund, chair of the Crawford County Community Fund, announced today that St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church of Prairie du Chien has donated its Hungry Jar collections, made by parishioners during the month of June 2013, to the Crawford Markets Care Program.

Associate Pastor Nick Barootian and Church & Society Committee Member Luanne Neumann met with Frydenlund to present the donation.  Barootian noted, “The Hungry Jar program at St. Peter was initiated over 5 years ago.  The Hungry Jar sits in front of our altar.  During the Sunday service our youngest attendees collect coins from the parishioners and bring these offerings to the Hungry Jar.  Each month our Church and Society Committee selects a group that is working to improve the lives of those in need in our community to receive the monies.  We are particularly proud to support the Markets Care program as it benefits both our local farmer’s market vendors and the clients of Crawford County food pantries.”

The Crawford County Community Fund initiated the Crawford Markets Care program in 2009.  Over the past 4 years, there have been over 1700 coupons redeemed translating to over $8500 worth of fresh produce purchased from local vendors by coupon users.  Annually the Crawford County Community Fund solicits sponsors for the program.  Couleecap, Mayo Clinic Health System, the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Gundersen Health System and the Gays Mills Lions Club are the additional sponsors of the 2013 program.

Donations for the Crawford Markets Care Program are received throughout the year and should be sent to Crawford Markets Care, PO Box 13, Seneca WI 54654.  The Crawford County Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc. is a tax-exempt public charity.  Donations to the Markets Care program are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The mission of the Crawford County Community Fund is to create stronger communities by matching generosity with economic need.  That mission is accomplished by building an endowment to fund a grants program, through the continuation of the Crawford Markets Care initiative, and through an annual county-wide leadership recognition program.
