Crawford County Community Fund Announces 2015 Sponsors of Crawford Markets Care Program

Food pantries in Crawford County will participate again this year in the Crawford Markets Care Program.  Designed for pantry clients, the program provides coupons that can be used to buy fresh locally grown and/or produced food at the Farmers Markets in Crawford County.  Since 2009, clients have redeemed coupons totaling $14,635.

Sharon Murphy, chair of the Crawford County Community Fund which sponsors of the program, notes that nine organizations have contributed $4500 for the continuation of the 2015 Crawford Markets Care Program.  They include CouleeCap, the Mayo Clinic Health System, Gundersen Health System, Peoples State Bank, the George Family Charitable Foundation, Crossing Rivers Health Foundation, Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare in Prairie du Chien, the Gays Mills Lions Club and the Seneca Lions Club.

Murphy noted that farmers markets in Ferryville and Gays Mills and the Prairie Street Market in Prairie du Chien all welcome the Markets Care coupons and that market managers have found the program has been growing in popularity each year.  She encourages visitors to the food pantries in Gays Mills and Prairie du Chien to take advantage of the opportunity to receive coupons to buy fresh, local produce.

“Visiting the farmers markets, meeting the vendors, and perhaps trying out something you’ve not eaten or cooked before can be an adventure,” Murphy said, “and farmer vendors are often eager to share recipes and make suggestion on simple ways to prepare fresh veggies. “

The Crawford Markets Care program is strongly endorsed by both the food pantries and the farmer’s market managers.  Additionally, the UW-Extension office in Crawford County is a partner, providing administrative support.

The Crawford County Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc. is a tax-exempt public charity.  The mission of the Crawford County Community Fund is to create stronger communities by matching generosity with economic need.  That mission is accomplished by building an endowment to fund an annual grant program, coordinating and continuing the Crawford Markets Care initiative, and identifying and recognizing Crawford County leaders through an annual recognition program.

Donations for the Crawford Markets Care Program are welcome and should be sent to Crawford County Community Fund, PO Box 13, Seneca WI 54654, with a notation designating the gift for the Markets Care Program.
