Announcing the Alice Anderson Dale Memorial Scholarship

Beginning this academic year, 2014-2015, seniors at Boscobel High School will have the opportunity to apply for and earn the Alice Anderson Dale Memorial Scholarship. Established by Dr. Jane C. Dale, Alice’s daughter, this $2000 scholarship to support attendance at an accredited 4-year college or university shall be renewable for up to 3 additional years. Application shall be made through the Boscobel High School Guidance department. Eligibility criteria include a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), evidence of involvement in community service initiatives, and pursuit of a degree in a health care field or education/teaching. Preference shall be given to a student with financial need and/or a student attending Luther College.

The scholarship honors Alice Anderson Dale who passed away this past January at age 92. Born on November 13, 1921 in Hickory Grove Township, Grant County, Alice was the second child of Carl and Alma (Olson) Anderson. She was the salutatorian of the Boscobel High School class of 1939 and earned a scholarship to attend Luther College. Unfortunately, family health issues prevented her matriculation as she remained at home to care for an ailing parent. Alice married John Dale in January of 1945. The Dales relocated and lived for many years in DeKalb, Illinois, where Alice worked at Northern Illinois University. After retiring, the Dales returned to Boscobel, where Alice resided until John’s death in 2004.

In creating this memorial to her mother, Dr. Dale noted, “Boscobel was ‘home’ to my mother. She enjoyed re-joining the community as a retiree. Mom knew the value of education. She also knew that many young people have difficulty assembling the resources to pursue their post-secondary education dreams. This scholarship is intended to assist a capable student, who without this level of on-going monetary support might not be able to pursue a 4-year degree.”

Upon learning of the scholarship and visiting with Dr. Dale, Rhonda Scallon, Boscobel High School guidance counselor stated, “Students at Boscobel High School are fortunate to have a community that supports them. This support- in honor of a 1939 graduate who lived here during both her formative and her sunset years – is especially appreciated. We are honored that Dr. Dale has chosen to honor her mother in this special way and look forward to her presenting the scholarship in May.”

The Alice Anderson Dale Memorial Scholarship was established through the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity. For more information about the Foundation contact Barb Daus, CFSW Donor Services Representative, at barb@cfws.org or 608-778-3344.
