The Badger Mine & Museum receives a grant for much-needed signage. The Badger Mine and Museum sits within Bad ger Park in the city of Shullsburg and is one of only three accessible mines in the State of Wisconsin. High School/College students guide visitors forty-seven feet below the surface. A museum, built in the 1960's, sits directly over this mine, brimming with artifacts, collected over many years. The Museum had fallen into disrepair and in the fall of 2004, a group of concerned alumni came together to raise funds for the restoration. $115,000 was raised simply by asking people, which shows how strong the commitment was on the part of the community. The now completed repairs include new doors, windows, roof, and flooring. Restrooms, insulation, heat and air conditioning were added to protect the artifacts as well as a new drainage system to reroute water around the building. Signs on Highway 11 were added to direct visitors to the museum and attract attention and alert visitors to the option of visiting the Badger Mine & Museum.
Music Stands and Marching Flags As the School District of Shullsburg was trying to rebuild the their Music Program, they found that the classroom equipment was in poor condition. On a regular basis, they were spending quality teaching time to fix the band stands. They were no longer movable, they were rusted, chipped, and bent. While also trying to rebuild the Marching Band Program, they noted the need for new color guard flags, but due to the school's tight budget, that wasn't going to be possible. The old color guard flags were also ripped, stained, and were literally falling apart. Thanks to the Shullsburg Fund, both of these issues have been addressed and above you will see not only bright, colorful flags, but also sturdy and reliable music stands!
